Fra annonceringen af konferencen:

From 1-5 November 2025, Hiroshima will host the 63rd Pugwash Conference. We are honoured to be meeting in Hiroshima to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings, as well as the 70th anniversary of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, and the 30th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize to Sir Joseph Rotblat and Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. From the bombed areas, where the scars are still very evident, the 63rd Pugwash Conference will send a strong message to the world: the abolition of nuclear weapons is necessary, now more than ever.

To publicly announce the conference, members of organizing committee in Pugwash Japan welcomed Secretary General Prof. Karen Hallberg to Hiroshima on 27 June, where a press conference was held. Welcoming the great efforts of the Pugwash Japan group and the significance of this event, Prof. Hallberg stated that “Given the critical state of the global situation surrounding nuclear weapons, holding the conference in Hiroshima in the 80th anniversary year of the atomic bombings is of great significance. We hope to engage in dialogue with everyone about peace and nuclear abolition, and to appeal to the younger generation and policymakers.” Keiko Ogura, who will participate in the conference as a hibakusha, said, “Every day, I feel despair and anger about the global situation, but if there is one thing I can find hope in, it is “dialogue”. I hope that scientists will show us the direction for solving the problem, so I want many people to listen to them.”

Pugwash Conferences feature in-depth debate and discussions of key topics of international concern. Up to 200 participants are drawn from around the world representing a wide range of scientific, policy, and academic disciplines. Throughout the conference, thirteen different panel sessions will feature expert speakers on a wide range of topical themes, while six separate working groups of between 15-30 experts each will convene for eight hours of work on specific subject areas. Pugwash Conferences are also important venues for cultivating future leaders and training the next generation in policy and science dialogue. The International Student/Young Pugwash (ISYP) Conference will be held immediately prior (30-31 October), convening 30-40 young people from all over the world who will then participate in the Pugwash Conference.
